Tips for Choosing a Roof Color

Replacing your roof is a big, and somewhat expensive, decision. Since it, literally, is your home’s first line of defense against the elements, you want to make sure it will hold up against Mother Nature. And while the material you choose for your roof is important, the color you choose can be just as big of a decision.

When it comes to choosing a roof color, here are some things you should keep in mind.

If your roof is in direct sunlight for most of the day without any shade from nearby trees, you may not want to choose a dark roof color. Dark shades absorb more heat from sunlight, so your home will end up being anywhere from 10 to 20 degrees warmer than it would be if you chose a lighter color.

While a warmer home in winter is great and can help you use less energy with your HVAC system, that same system will have to work even harder in order to counteract all the heat your home absorbs during the warm months.

Your Architecture

There are some roof colors that look better with certain kinds of architecture. Simple speaking on size, darker roof colors will make your home look smaller, while lighter colors make it look larger.

In terms of design, different kinds of homes look better with different colored roofs. Rust-colored tiles tend to look better on Mediterranean style homes, while Victorian homes tend to look best with dark grey or brown roofs, and rural homes with wood accents look very nice with light grey roofs.

Your Neighborhood

While you may be tempted to choose a more “out there” color so your roof can stand out, it’s not allowed or considerate. Your town’s homeowner association may have rules regarding your roof color, or local ordinance may require certain limitations to fit in with environmental concerns.
