Can My Awning Be Used in Rain?

A retractable awning is a great resource to have in your yard, especially on days when the sun feels like it’s literally beating down on you. But while it’s great for sunny days, many homeowners wonder if a retractable awning can be used in rain or snow. Well, it all depends on the weather. As Spring approaches us, we encourage you to consider investing in a retractable awning for your warmer weather months.

Can My Retractable Awning Be Used in Rain?

The best part of a retractable awning is that you can reel it back towards your home if the weather outside gets too rough. That being said, you can typically have it extended and use it when it’s raining — all long as you have a high-quality awning. This means it should be:

TUV-Certified

This ensures it was made and installed using the best industry standard methods for quality and safety.

Made of Stainless Steel

If your awning arms are made of low-quality metals rather than anti-corrosive stainless steel, they can rust, and your awning can become damaged or collapse under the effects of rain or snow.

Use Durable Fabric

Obviously, if you don’t use a waterproof fabric, your awning won’t stand up well to rain or snow. Our SunShade awning is made using only 100% marine-grade acrylic fabric to protect you from precipitation!

Okay, So What About Harsh Weather?

While you should be fine using your SunShade retractable awning in some levels of rain and snow, we don’t recommend using it in monsoon-level weather or during a snowstorm that is dropping six to seven inches of snow. Light flurries are fine, but any weather worse than that, don’t risk it — just retract the awning.
