Hi, it’s me — Gary the Gutter. I know a lot of people have gutters on their homes, but they don’t all know how much work goes into a gutter’s job. That’s why I wanted to give you a run-down of what it’s like to be me.

First and foremost, my job is to keep water off the sides of my house. When it rains, all of the water collects in me and then flows down my downspout away from the house. If I wasn’t here, water would slide down the roof, settle around the bottom of the house, and end up seeping into the basement and foundation, causing flooding or water damage. I don’t want to toot my own horn, but I do a pretty good job of keeping the house safe.

But honestly, my owners could do a better job of taking care of me. My biggest two complaints? Debris and birds. When it rains, the wind blows tons of leaves and twigs into me, and they end up getting stuck around my joints and clogging my downspouts. I can’t really do my job when that happens because the water just pools since it can’t go anywhere else.

And then there are the birds. Since they see all these leaves and twigs and such lying around in me, they take it upon themselves to call me their new home. It wouldn’t mind so much if they were courteous. But no! They bring bugs and germs, and their nests have even damaged me in a few places.

If I had it my way, I would have my owners install the Gutter Helmet protection system on me, so leaves and debris never get stuck to begin with.
