How to Remove Mold From Your Roof

Mold on Roof

Roof shingles that are exposed to a significant amount of moisture are more prone to mold, mildew and other types of fungal growth. If left untreated, roofing shingles can become damaged and deteriorate. In extreme cases, mold can work its way toward the interior of your home, thus wreaking havoc in your attic or crawlspace.

If you have a stubborn mold problem on your roof, here are some removal and cleaning tips:

What You Will Need

Before you get started on your roof cleaning, here are some items you will need:

  • Hose
  • Bucket
  • Bleach
  • Water
  • Protective mask
  • Tarps
  • Rubber Gloves
  • Pump sprayer

Solution and Cleaning

In a bucket, combine a 50/50 mix of bleach and water to create a cleaning solution and spray from the ground to moldy areas of the roof with a pump sprayer. Leave the solution on the roof surface for 20 minutes then rinse thoroughly with a hose on low pressure.

Be sure to wear a protective mask to guard yourself from breathing in bleach fumes and put on rubber gloves to protect your skin. Lay tarps over plants and shrubs located around the perimeter to shield them from contact with the bleach solution.

What NOT to Do

Don’t Use a Pressure Washer

Never use a pressure washer on your roof. Too much pressure could cause damage and remove the granules that protect the roof from sun exposure. Pressure washing can also accelerate wear and tear and diminish its life expectancy.

Climb on Your Roof

We highly advise against climbing on a roof. The best way to get a deep clean is to call the pros who know how to safely carry out mold removal.
